Roger Federer will have to wait for his first Olympic gold medal.
The 39-year-old tennis star will not participate in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Federer confirmed on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon that he had withdrawn from the game.
Why doesn’t he play? Federer wrote that he encountered setbacks on the surgically repaired right knee.
The following is the full text of Federer’s statement.
In the grass season, I unfortunately suffered a knee frustration and accepted my decision to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics. I am very disappointed, because every time I represent Switzerland to compete is an honor and bright spot in my career. I have started to recover and hope to return to the tournament later this summer. I wish the entire Swiss team good luck, and I will come from afar. As always, Hopschwitz!
Of course, this is disappointing for Federer, because this may be his last chance to participate in the Olympics. When the 2024 Summer Olympics begin, he will still be able to compete, but by then he will be 42 years old.
The good news for Federer fans is that he does not rule out returning to the game later in the summer. Maybe he still has a chance to participate in the 2021 US Open.
Federer’s most recent game was in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, losing to Poland’s Hubert Hekaz. With a stiff knee, Federer swept his opponent 6-0 in the straight set finals.
Since Federer and Rafael Nadal did not participate in the 2021 Olympics, Novak Djokovic hopes that the road to winning the gold medal will be easier. So far this season, he has won all three majors and can prepare himself Rare bid in the calendar gold slam If he wins in Tokyo.
