Mavericks coach rumor: Jason Kidd is the “primary candidate” and has been recognized by an unlikely source

Is Rick Carlisle playing a kid’s-or Kidd-game?

The Mavericks are looking for a new head coach, although the current choices on the basketball court are not entirely attractive. Reported by ESPN’s Marc Stein The current Lakers assistant coach Jason Kidd is the “main candidate” for this job.

To make things more interesting, in a conversation with ESPN’s Tim McMahon, former Mavericks and current Pacers coach Rick Carlisle publicly supported Kidd as the head coach on Tuesday:

I hope that Jason Kidd will be the next coach of the Mavericks because he and Luka have a lot in common in terms of players. I just think this is a good situation for Luca, and I think it will be an amazing situation for Jason. I am the only person on the planet who has taught these two guys and knows all their special qualities as basketball players. For me, it will be a great marriage, but it is an opinion.

Kidd has served as the head coach several times in the league: he coached the Nets for a year in Brooklyn, then for 3 1/2 seasons in Milwaukee, and then was fired in the middle of the 2018 season.

Stein reported that Kidd has many supporters in Dallas, mainly because of his contribution to the team as a player during the 2010-11 team’s championship season.

Kidd is currently an assistant coach for the Lakers, completing his second year in the organization. He is a member of the 2020 Los Angeles championship team.

Of course, Kidd’s polarized reputation as a head coach and subpar results (183-190) mean that Mavericks fans looking for a greener pasture after Carlisle leaves may still lack hope.
