What is the Westminster Kennel Club dog show?
The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is an annual event with nearly 3,000 dogs participating. Usually, it is held in Madison Square Garden, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will be held outdoors in Tarrytown, New York in 2021.
The show competed by dogs to become the best in their group. There are seven groups, including hounds, toys, non-sports, sports, work, herding and terriers. Then the best dog in each group competed for the title of “Best Performance”.
The show also includes Master Agility Championships and Master Obedience Championships.
History of the Westminster Dog Show
The first Westminster Dog Show was held in 1877 by the Westminster Kennel Club in Gilmore Gardens, the predecessor of Madison Square Garden. The event was supposed to last three days, but after 1,201 dogs entered, it was finally extended by one day. Since then, it has become an annual event.
Since 1877, the show has been held annually. It happened during the Great Depression, the war and the pandemic, just like 2021.
Westminster’s name comes from a Manhattan hotel, where the hunter group who founded the kennel club often meets. The only sporting event that lasts longer than the Westminster Dog Show is the Kentucky Derby, two years before it.
Westminster Dog Show Winners
Since 1907, that is, 30 years after the Westminster Dog Show began in 1877, the Best Performance Award has been awarded once a year. The terrier group has won the award 47 times, which is the group with the highest number of awards among all groups. Last year’s champion Poodle Siba won the 11th victory for the non-sports group and tied for fourth in seven groups.
